says:*spacey icelandic band hits mid-western usa college town*
seeing these men perform for the first time is quite an experience, indeed. no words can truly describe the emotions throughout the evening.
the evening at the wexner-mershon auditorium held tons of arty college kids in a small diameter of space. once the ‘victory rose’ boys hit the stage, after the amazing and wonderful, siggi armann , they began the honors of vaka. i swear a pin could be heard in that place. people were in awe, most looked like they were about to piss themselves. however, a few unwanted fans in the row behind me kept yelling ‘ what the fuckkkk’ for no apparent reason. however vaka, posed as a pledge of another world.
now whoever is responsible for the video arrangements and the lighting deserves some recognition. amazing. completely. as the electronic organs of fyrsta began, video of a young girl appeared to the audience. the girl looked as though she were in a moving vehicle; the movements fitted the fyrsta like a puzzle. along with the transparent ‘yousaiss’ of hoplandic mixed with green, blue, and purple flashing lights blinding my vision, it was perfect. the feeling that comes to mind here is smoking joints and feeling as though you were floating.
samskeyti begins with the loose keyboards of kjartan sveinsson. and video fragments of children…and scenery of some sort and a fitting disco ball as samskeyti itself mirrored the albums version almost perfectly.
as the introduction of ný batterí took off, there was something the audience recognized and clapping in the middle of the song took the experience off guard a little bit. the climax was near perfect, while mr orri just bangs away on the drums as thought their were an earthquake. this was just amazing and blew everyone out of that place.
njósnavélin begins and we think of mr tom cruise jumping off a building right? well, not on this evening. and the visuals show the same humanistic qualities of the ones previous. this is automatically a favourite to everyone. then svefn-g-englar begins and claps are to be heard. this has to be my least favourite song of sigur rós, however, tonite it was just lovely. also , the un earthly echos of jónsi singing into his gibson was an evening winner. i looked at everyone else around me and they, too were in admiration.
now even though salka is the new song, it played a favourite of mine the whole evening. however, i regret listening to it before the show. i consider this to be the coolest song.. but many people did not seem too thrilled as i. as hafssól began people started to leave .. for what reason i am not sure..
that nite in middle western america changed people by the pressence of crazy icelandic men. there was to be no complaints from people leaving. however, some seating problems interrupted the show some. all in all, popplagið has to be the favourite. the climax was just unbelievable. the strong instrumentation led me in a spacey feeling, as it was good. one of the best concert experiences of my lifetime, and will be remembered. these guys are a bargain at any price.
